WHAT IS HISTORY?
The study of the past
is called History. The English word 'History' is derived from the Greek word
'Historia' meaning research, inquiry, or investigation. Thus, the knowledge
acquired by the investigation is known as 'Historia'.
The Greek historian
Herodotus (484BC- 425BC) was the first real historian of the world. he wrote
only one book 'the Histories'. Herodotus was the father of history.
According to British
Historian E.H.Carr (1892-1928AD): " History is an unending dialogue
between past and present."
History the study of
the past can be divided into three periods to clearly understand the time
formes-
(a) Ancient history
(b) Medieval history
(c) Modern history.
The period tends to
overlap.
The Indian subcontinent, the great landmass of South Asia, is the name of one of the world's oldest and most influential civilization . The subcontinent, which for historical purposes is usually called simply "India" , is understood to comprise the areas of not only the present day republic of India but also the republics of Pakistan (partitioned from India in 1947) and Bangladesh (which formed the eastern part of pakistan until it's independence in 1971).
Since early times the Indian subcontinent appears to have provided an attractive habitat for human occupation.
